Rock The Monkey

This is a short article I just read in the December ‘09 issue of Revolver magazine…

“Is Metallica music for apes? According to a study recently published in the scientific journal Biology Letters, it may just be. Researchers, led by Chuck Snowdon, a psychologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, played 30-second blasts of music- including classical composer Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” Nine Inch Nail’s “The Fragile,” Tool’s “The Grudge,” and Metallica’s “Of Wolf and Man,” as well as specially composed “monkey melodies” based on monkey calls- for 14 cotton-top tamarins. The only human music the primates responded to was the Metallica song, which had an unexpected calming effect. The researchers determined that the tamarins reacted only to tunes that incorporate features commonly heard in monkey calls, such as rising and falling tones. James Hetfield could not be reached for comment.”
